Ivana Barlow, a former president of the Associated Students Organization (ASO) at West Los Angeles College, has been recognized as the college’s Student Spotlight of the Week. Barlow recently transferred to California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Psychology. She plans to use her education to open a day care and youth literacy center.
“Children are our world,” Barlow said. “I’m very interested in having a part in that and showing students that someone cares about their future.”
Barlow has balanced her academic pursuits with parenting responsibilities, including adopting one of her two children. She credits programs such as EOPS and CalWORKs for providing essential support during her studies. “There are so many benefits and resources for students who are parents,” she noted. Her nine-year-old daughter has become both a source of encouragement and inspiration, expressing interest in following Barlow’s path in student leadership.
In addition to her role with ASO, Barlow participated in local organizations before attending West Los Angeles College and often took on leadership positions. On campus, she has been involved with the Christian Club and contributed to organizing various events. “I want to be that person that people can come to and feel safe speaking to,” she said. “I believe that’s a big part of being a leader.”
Barlow described her time at West Los Angeles College as instrumental for her personal growth and future goals: “It will definitely help me as I go forward in my future.”
