The University of California Board of Regents has begun its search for the 2027-28 student regent, a position that allows one student to serve as a full voting member on the university’s governing board. The role is open to all students across UC’s ten campuses.
The student regent serves for two years: the first year as a non-voting regent-designate and the second year as a full voting member. Those selected will have their systemwide tuition and fees waived during their term and will receive a stipend.
According to the announcement, serving as student regent includes representing nearly 300,000 students in board decisions, influencing university policy, advocating for issues such as access and affordability, and developing leadership skills.
Students interested in applying are encouraged to attend an informational webinar on January 29, 2026. During this session, current Student Regent Sonya Brooks and the student regent-designate will discuss the responsibilities of the position and answer questions about the application process.
“We hope every student who is interested in this position will join us for the webinar, and then apply for the position,” said Student Regent Sonya Brooks. “It’s so important that UC’s governing board include a passionate, outspoken student who wants to make a difference.”
Applications must be submitted by March 8, 2026. Additional resources are available online for those seeking more information or wishing to apply.
