Scott Eggener, MD, has been appointed as the new chair of the department of urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and will also serve as executive medical director for urology at UCLA Health. The appointment follows a national search.
Eggener previously worked at the University of Chicago, where he was the Bruce and Beth White Family Professor of Surgery and vice chair of urology. He is recognized for his expertise in treating prostate, testicular, and kidney cancers. At the University of Chicago, he founded the High-Risk and Advanced Prostate Cancer Clinic.
“I am honored to join UCLA Health and lead a department with such a distinguished legacy in patient care, research and education,” Eggener said. “I am invigorated by all the exciting opportunities and talented people.”
Eggener’s research focuses on prostate and testicular cancer, especially on reducing overdiagnosis and overtreatment in prostate cancer through clinical trials. He has published more than 350 articles in journals such as JAMA, JNCI, and NEJM. His work has also appeared in national media including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
He has received several awards including the Society of Urologic Oncology Young Investigator Award and the American Urological Association Mid-Career Award. Eggener is currently an associate editor for the Journal of Urology and has served on editorial boards for other major journals. He has contributed to cancer guideline panels for organizations like the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Urological Association, and National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
In addition to his academic roles, Eggener serves on executive boards such as International Volunteers in Urology and is on the board of directors for the Society of Urologic Oncology. He has also been a visiting professor at over 20 institutions.
Eggener earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Northwestern Medicine, and finished a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
