Snap Inc. and the Musée du Louvre have launched a new augmented reality (AR) experience called The Incredible Unknowns of the Louvre. This initiative follows a 2023 pilot that focused on Ancient Egyptian works.
The project allows museum visitors to use their smartphones to interact with six masterpieces. By scanning QR codes on artwork labels, users can access digital content that reveals lost forms, materials, and colors, provides insight into artistic techniques, and offers alternative ways to view iconic pieces in the Louvre’s collection.
According to Snap Inc., “All of these experiences were designed by Snap’s AR Studio Paris in close collaboration with the Musée du Louvre curators, based on archival materials and scholarly references.” Additional information is available on louvre.fr for those interested in learning more about the artworks through AR.
Snap’s AR Studio Paris worked closely with museum curators to ensure the educational aspect of this project. The experience aims to create new interactions between visitors and art, introducing innovative methods for exploring cultural heritage.
The interactive AR feature is free for all visitors and is intended to make art more accessible while encouraging deeper engagement with the museum’s collections.
