Snap Inc. announced on April 3 that its short-form video platform, Spotlight, will continue to emphasize original and authentic content created by users. The announcement followed an April Fools’ joke in which the company temporarily renamed Spotlight to “Reals,” a move described as a playful nod to the unfiltered nature of its community.
The clarification matters for Snapchat’s user base and creators, who rely on Spotlight for sharing personal moments and building audiences. Snap Inc. said that while the name change was not real, the commitment to authenticity remains central to its strategy.
The company stated it is focusing on elevating original content made with the Snapchat camera, aiming to reduce synthetic AI videos and widely syndicated posts. “Snapchatters come to Spotlight for fresh, personal content that feels native to our community, driving a more meaningful experience for everyone,” according to Snap Inc.
Snap Inc. highlighted strong growth in both engagement and creator participation on Spotlight. It reported that creators who post daily are growing their followers more than ten times faster than those who do not post regularly. In Q4 2025, Snapchat reached 474 million daily active users and 946 million monthly active users globally, with U.S.-based creators posting on Spotlight increasing nearly 50 percent year-over-year.
The company said it is investing further in tools and experiences designed to help both everyday users and established creators share original content more easily and grow their presence online.
Concluding its statement, Snap Inc. reaffirmed its commitment: “So while Spotlight isn’t becoming ‘Reals,’ the spirit of it–keeping things real–is here to stay, and it’s easier than ever for Snapchatters to grow, build an audience, and go viral on Spotlight.”
