The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward area increased by 0.4 percent during the two months ending August 2025, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Regional Commissioner Chris Rosenlund stated that “the index for all items less food and energy rose 0.5 percent during the two-month period.” The report also indicated that the food index rose by 0.6 percent, while the energy index decreased by 2.0 percent.

For the year ending in August, the all items CPI-U increased by 2.5 percent. Over this same period, the index for all items excluding food and energy advanced by 2.4 percent, and the food index increased by 3.5 percent. The energy index saw a smaller annual increase of 0.7 percent.

Within the two-month period, grocery store purchases (food at home) were up by 0.5 percent, with price increases seen in most major grocery store categories, while food away from home rose by 0.7 percent.

Looking at annual figures, prices for groceries went up by 4.3 percent and prices for eating out increased by 2.7 percent.

Energy prices declined over the last two months mainly due to a drop in gasoline prices of 3.9 percent; however, over twelve months gasoline prices were down only slightly—by 1.8 percent.

Among components of all items less food and energy, apparel saw an increase of 6.2 percent over two months while shelter costs edged up by 0.2 percent; recreation costs fell by 1.6 percent in this period.

Annually, household furnishings and operations were up by 5.3 percent and shelter costs increased by 1.7 percent; apparel was down significantly over twelve months at minus eleven percent.

The next scheduled release for San Francisco’s Consumer Price Index is November 13, covering October data.

The Consumer Price Index tracks changes in prices paid over time on a fixed basket of goods and services and is published every two months specifically for San Francisco by BLS. Local indexes such as this are subject to more volatility than national averages because they are based on smaller samples and are not adjusted seasonally or intended to compare price levels between cities.

Data series history—including original values and percentage changes across multiple periods—is available through BLS data query tools referenced in Table 1 of this release under historical data.

This CPI covers Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties in California.
