For the two months ending in November 2025, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the San Diego-Carlsbad area increased by 0.1 percent, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Chris Rosenlund, Regional Commissioner for BLS, stated that “the index for all items less food and energy advanced 0.1 percent during the two-month period.” During this time, the food index decreased by 1.2 percent, while energy prices rose by 2.3 percent.

The report noted that BLS did not collect survey data for October 2025 due to a lapse in appropriations and could not retroactively gather this information. For some indexes, nonsurvey data sources were used to calculate values when possible.

Looking at annual trends, the CPI-U in San Diego rose 4.0 percent over the twelve months ending in November 2025. The index excluding food and energy increased by 4.2 percent during this period; food prices rose by 1.1 percent overall, with grocery store purchases declining slightly by 0.1 percent and restaurant-related spending increasing by 2.9 percent. Energy prices climbed significantly over the year, with an increase of 8.7 percent; gasoline prices alone went up by 7.0 percent.

Within the two-month window ending in November, household furnishings and operations saw a price increase of 1.8 percent and shelter costs grew by 0.6 percent; however, apparel and medical care experienced declines of -3.9 percent and -1.4 percent respectively.

Over the year-long period examined, shelter costs increased substantially at +5.6 percent and medical care was up by +3.7 percent compared to last year’s figures; meanwhile apparel dropped -6.3 percent and recreation fell -0.5 percent.

The next scheduled release of CPI data for San Diego is set for February 11, 2026.

The Consumer Price Index measures average price changes over time based on a fixed basket of goods and services specific to each region or metropolitan area as part of the national program conducted by BLS bi-monthly.

Local-area indexes like San Diego’s have smaller sample sizes than national averages which can result in greater volatility due to sampling or measurement error.
