Los Angeles Southwest College recognized Miranda Johnson as its Student Spotlight of the Week, according to a March 20 announcement. Johnson, a student-athlete and member of the college’s women’s basketball team, was highlighted for her perseverance and determination both on and off the court.

The recognition underscores the importance of resilience in balancing academics, athletics, and work responsibilities. Johnson’s experience reflects how students can overcome challenges through teamwork and consistency.

Johnson described her role in the women’s basketball team during its return season after a three-year hiatus. “This was the first year the team came back after about three years,” she explained. “It was such a fun experience. We faced a lot of adversity, but we had the most heart.” Despite often playing against larger teams, Johnson said that she and her teammates relied on speed and focus rather than size. She emphasized their unity: “Seeing the other girls keep showing up right along with me boosted all of us,” she said. “We really came together as a group.”

Originally from Los Angeles but raised in Rosamond, California, Johnson found LASC’s cultural environment welcoming. “Seeing people who look like me—students, professors, and administrators—was a breath of fresh air,” she said. “It made me feel proud and grateful to be here.”

Johnson is majoring in Administration of Justice with plans to become a lawyer—a goal she has held since second grade. After receiving an acceptance letter from California State University Northridge, she intends to transfer there to complete her bachelor’s degree before preparing for law school.

Balancing studies, athletics, and an overnight job at Amazon has been challenging for Johnson. She offered advice to fellow students: “Stay consistent. Even on days you don’t feel like doing anything, just keep showing up. Determination outweighs everything.”
