The University of California, Merced has received a $38 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, marking the largest philanthropic contribution in the university’s history. This is Scott’s second major gift to UC Merced; her previous $20 million donation in 2021 supported advancements in student aid, research capacity, and campus development.
University officials say this new funding will help advance UC Merced’s mission to support research and provide educational opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. Many of these students are the first in their families to attend college.
Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz said, “This remarkable act of generosity affirms what we know to be true – UC Merced is changing lives, uplifting families, and reshaping what is possible for California and beyond. We are profoundly grateful for Ms. Scott’s continued trust in our mission and for her belief in our faculty, students and the extraordinary promise of higher education.”
The funds will be used to accelerate several initiatives at UC Merced:
– Student success programs that aim to reduce financial barriers.
– Support for faculty research and experiential learning designed to prepare graduates for a changing workforce.
– Capital projects that expand research facilities and enhance spaces for students as enrollment grows.
The donation also boosts the university’s comprehensive fundraising campaign called Boldly Forward. According to the university, this commitment moves the campaign into a new phase while reinforcing its reputation as an innovative public R1 research institution.
UC President James B. Milliken stated, “UC Merced is a powerful example of what public higher education can achieve when access and excellence move hand in hand. Ms. Scott’s landmark gift will strengthen the university’s ability to open doors, change lives and expand opportunity across the Central Valley and beyond. We are deeply grateful for her leadership and generosity.”
