Nathaniel Thomas, a student at Los Angeles Harbor College, has been named Student Spotlight of the Week. Thomas is pursuing degrees in Computer Science & Engineering and Mathematics & Natural Science, which he expects to complete by June 2026.

Thomas described his academic journey as motivated by practical experience. He said, “Everyone has something to offer, so listen closely when they try to speak!” He is currently working on implementing a RISC-V processor on an FPGA as part of his studies.

Born in Germany and raised in California, Thomas has been recognized as a two-year Dean’s List Honors student at Harbor College. He already holds a degree in liberal arts and has earned certifications in Semiconductor Fabrication, Artificial Intelligence Systems, and CompTIA A+ as of 2024. Over the past year, he expanded his education by taking classes at USC through a scholarship opportunity.

Thomas is also active outside the classroom. He serves as a representative for the Black Student Union (BSU) and participates in the STEM Club at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC). Reflecting on his family background, Thomas noted that his grandfather, Nathaniel Oglesby Calloway, was “the first Black man in America to earn a PhD in chemistry west of the Mississippi,” achieving this milestone before turning 30.

Acknowledging those who have supported him along the way, Thomas stated: “Do know I haven’t gotten here alone. My family has been a huge support system. I am also incredibly grateful for the guidance from Professor Alberto Pimentel and Professor Brittany Gray, along with the entire team at General Counseling, Disabled Student Services, and the Tutoring Center. The people and connections I’ve made at Harbor have been, and remain to be, truly instrumental in my journey!”
