Ethan Johnson, a student at Los Angeles City College (LACC), was recently recognized as the college’s Student Spotlight of the Week. Johnson chose LACC after researching programs that balanced creativity and technical skill in music. He found that LACC’s commitment to music technology and production aligned with his goals and provided an affordable path to a strong academic foundation.
Johnson described campus life as engaging and supportive. “What I love about LACC is the variety of the events the school hosts, both informative and fun,” said Johnson. “It feels like the college really tries to keep students in the loop and connected to what’s happening, and this makes being on campus enjoyable and motivating.”
He credited LACC’s academic structure and support services for helping him succeed. “LACC’s clearly defined study pathways, paired with programs such as Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and First Year Experience (FYE), have made higher education more accessible and manageable to many students,” Johnson said. He also highlighted cultural programs such as Umoja, Puente, and APASS for reinforcing a sense of belonging among students. According to Johnson, LACC’s location in Hollywood provides unique advantages for those interested in performing arts careers.
Currently focusing on music technology, songwriting, and creative production, Johnson spends much of his time collaborating with other artists in the music department. His musical journey began with learning instruments like flute and trombone during his school years. The COVID-19 pandemic led him to explore music production as a new creative outlet.
Johnson has already completed a certificate in Songwriting and Composition. He plans to transfer to Berklee College of Music for further studies in music production, with hopes of eventually earning a master’s degree. “I’d like to build a sustainable career in producing and songwriting, while also keeping teaching in mind as a future possibility.” He expressed interest in giving back by creating opportunities for collaboration among musicians at LACC: “I also hope to one day create a lasting presence on campus through a club, student collective, or creative program that brings musicians and producers together.”
Reflecting on his time at LACC, Johnson said: “It is a space where students can explore their interests, refine their goals, and grow with guidance rather than pressure. LACC empowers students to turn curiosity into purpose and creative ambition into a clear path forward.”
