IAM Women’s Leadership Program focuses on developing union leaders

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) held its Women’s Leadership Program at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, according to a March 10 announcement. The program aims to empower IAM union members by building leadership skills and confidence for active roles within their locals and districts.

The initiative is significant as it supports the development of future union leaders, particularly women, ensuring their voices are represented in the labor movement. The program covers essential leadership topics such as organizing, negotiations, parliamentary procedure, political involvement, strategic planning, and network building. These skills are intended to help members strengthen solidarity and work toward improving standards of living for workers.

Participants also learn about the Leadership Excellence Assembly of Dedicated Sisters (LEADS) Program. This initiative creates new pathways for IAM women to move into leadership positions and aims to keep the organization relevant now and in the future.

This session was notable as it was the first Women’s Leadership Program led by Dee Colbert since her appointment as IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director by International President Brian Bryant on January 1, 2026. Colbert said, “This class reminded us that leadership isn’t just about titles, it’s about lifting your voice, lifting others, and creating change together.”

Colbert added that “The Women’s Leadership Program reflects the IAM’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of union leaders and ensuring that women’s voices are heard and valued throughout the labor movement.”

The continued focus on leadership training highlights IAM’s efforts to foster inclusion and prepare members for greater responsibilities within their communities.
