The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is urging the U.S. Senate to pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R. 2550), a bill intended to restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers. The IAM has called on its members and supporters to contact their congressional representatives in support of the legislation.
The push follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on March 27, which ended collective bargaining for federal unions. The IAM described this move as “an attack on civil servants and their rights as workers.”
IAM International President Brian Bryant addressed both chambers of Congress, stating in letters: “Federal workers are essential, and they’re committed to serving the American people. These workers deserve the right of collective bargaining, which provides protections in the workplace and better service to the public, just to name a few benefits.”
The Protect America’s Workforce Act was introduced in the House by Representatives Jared Golden (D-ME) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). According to the IAM, it has strong bipartisan support.
The union highlighted that it represents thousands of federal employees, including those under its affiliate, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), which covers about 110,000 federal workers across the United States.
