Taylor Rehmet, a longtime leader within the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and a military veteran, has been sworn in as a Texas State Senator. This marks the first time a rank-and-file union member has taken office in the Texas Senate.

Rehmet has held several leadership positions within the IAM union. He stated that his move into public office is a continuation of his advocacy for workers’ rights. “He explicitly pledges to address critical issues such as stagnant wages, retirement security and public education,” according to Rehmet.

His inauguration was noted as a significant moment for the labor movement in Texas.
