Howard “Howie” Huestis, president of IAM Local 1746, has been recognized for his contributions to the East Hartford community. Huestis, who leads union members at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut, has worked closely with local organizations to provide resources for students in need.
“I grew up in this town. I am dedicated to this town,” said Huestis. “I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of needing donations.”
Under Huestis’s leadership, Therese Hervieux and Taylor Salmon from the IAM Local 1746 Women’s Committee have continued their partnership with East Hartford Public Schools. This initiative delivers thousands of school supplies each year to children who may not otherwise have access. The annual event is held at East Hartford Green Park and provides items such as backpacks, notebooks, rulers, and pencils.
The IAM Eastern Territory also supports the effort by donating additional supplies for distribution during the event.
At a recent meeting of the Connecticut State Council, Howie Huestis received an IAM Human Rights Award. The award was presented by David Sullivan, General Vice President of IAM Eastern Territory, and Chief of Staff Lorie Wilson in recognition of Huestis’s ongoing commitment to organizing and maintaining involvement in the backpack rally.
Over time, the event has grown to include booths from other community partners and sometimes offers health services aimed at helping families prepare for the start of school.
