IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez visited members of IAM Local 1998 in Hawaii, underscoring the essential contributions these workers make to both national security and the broader labor movement. The visit highlighted Local 1998’s long-standing presence within the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Western Territory.

Founded in 1951, Local 1998 has represented workers in Hawaii for over seventy years. The local is recognized as a key part of IAM’s efforts in the region, reflecting ongoing needs for union representation and the dedication of its members.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” said GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez noted that Hawaii’s geographic location makes Local 1998 particularly significant for economic and national reasons. Members work in sectors vital to infrastructure and defense, contributing directly to operational readiness and mission success. He emphasized that their responsibilities have an impact beyond individual workplaces, influencing national security across the country.

The general vice president also pointed out that many Local 1998 members are involved with supporting defense operations. He acknowledged their expertise and professionalism while reaffirming IAM’s commitment to protecting their rights, securing fair contracts, and ensuring safe working conditions.

Martinez praised the diversity among Local 1998’s membership, which reflects Hawaii’s multicultural environment. He stated that this diversity strengthens unity within the union: “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

During his visit, Martinez met with both rank-and-file members and local leadership to discuss priorities and concerns. He reiterated IAM’s intention to maintain strong connections with Locals throughout the Western Territory, regardless of distance.
