Governor Gavin Newsom has called on Californians to support their local economies by shopping at small businesses during Small Business Saturday. The annual event highlights the importance of neighborhood retailers, restaurants, artisans, and service providers during the holiday season.

“Small businesses are central to California’s economic strength and cultural identity.  They’re not just storefronts — they’re dreams, risks, and livelihoods. When Californians choose to shop local, we’re investing in our neighbors, in the character of our communities, and in the economic strength that makes California unique. It’s about strengthening the resilience and vibrancy of the places we call home,” said Governor Newsom.

Small businesses make up more than 99.8% of all businesses in California and employ nearly half of the state’s workforce. Many are minority-owned, accounting for almost 60% of small businesses statewide. These enterprises contribute significantly to California’s economy by exporting over $70 billion worth of goods and services each year—more than 42% of all exports from the state.

The state supports its 4.3 million small businesses through programs led by the California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA), part of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development. CalOSBA initiatives include SCALE (Success, Capital Access, and Leadership for Entrepreneurs), which helps entrepreneurs overcome barriers to starting or growing their businesses—especially those from underserved communities—by providing access to capital, mentorship, and technical assistance. Since its inception seven years ago, SCALE has contributed to creating over 84,000 jobs, supported nearly 14,000 new business launches, and facilitated more than $2.9 billion in lending capital.

Another program under CalOSBA is Accelerate CA. This initiative focuses on high-growth companies across various sectors such as biomanufacturing and sustainable energy by offering seed grants between $25,000 and $100,000 through a network of 13 hubs across California. In 2025 alone, Accelerate CA surpassed $2 million in investments awarded.

To mark Small Business Saturday this week under its theme “Supporting Small Strengthens Us All,” CalOSBA is sharing advice from business advisors within its SCALE network on social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn to help small retailers maximize opportunities during the holiday shopping period.

Californians are encouraged this weekend to visit local shops and community markets as a way to celebrate small businesses that add creativity and diversity throughout every region in the state.
