San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area offer a variety of educational and interactive attractions for families traveling with children. Monet Hambrick, known as The Traveling Child, recently visited several destinations in the region with her two daughters and shared her experiences on the California Now Podcast with host Soterios Johnson.

One of the highlights is The Tech Interactive in San Jose, an award-winning science center recognized with the National Medal for Museum and Library Service in 2015. Known locally as “The Tech,” this facility features STEM-focused exhibits suitable for all ages. Visitors can design robots using real sensors, experiment in a digital experience lab where art merges with technology, and create virtual underwater worlds or land animals using Animaker robots. For older children, there is a Cyber Detectives program focused on internet safety.

Nearby is the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, which caters to younger visitors through play-based exhibits. Children can engage in creative activities such as exploring a fire truck or an international food market. There are also dedicated spaces like the Wonder Cabinet for toddlers to explore textures and the Crawl Space designed specifically for babies.

About 72 miles south of San Jose lies the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey. Home to more than 35,000 sea creatures across 200 exhibits, it offers families a comprehensive look at marine life. The aquarium was established with support from the Packard Foundation and has expanded its mission through research initiatives like the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and various conservation programs. Notable family attractions include Splash Zone—featuring kelp forests, coral reefs, and penguins visible via Penguin Cam.

In San Francisco’s waterfront area, Pier 39 stands out as one of the city’s most-visited spots due to its scenic views of landmarks such as Alcatraz Island and Golden Gate Bridge. Families can visit Aquarium of the Bay to learn about local aquatic species—including moon jellies, rays, sea lions, and sevengill sharks—and participate in animal feedings or behind-the-scenes tours. Dining options feature family-friendly seafood restaurants like Swiss Louis Italian and Seafood Restaurant or Pier Market; additional activities include carousel rides and shopping at specialty boutiques.

Also located in San Francisco is the California Academy of Sciences within Golden Gate Park—a combined aquarium, planetarium, rainforest exhibit, research center, and natural history museum. Family-friendly highlights include Steinhart Aquarium’s Twilight Zone exhibit; Morrison Planetarium; Osher Rainforest biodome; Kimball Natural History Museum’s Color of Life exhibit exploring color relationships among animals; along with sustainability initiatives that focus on green building operations and environmental research programs.

These destinations provide hands-on learning opportunities for families looking to combine travel with education while visiting Northern California.
