The U.S. Census Bureau has published new data tables detailing the 2025 counts of government organizations across the United States. The release includes three main tables: Government Units by State, Local Governments by Type and State, and Special District Governments by Function and State. In addition, the Organization Public Use File for State and Local Government Structures is now available, offering a comprehensive database of state and local governments along with their major agencies.
These datasets categorize governments based on characteristics such as type, state, population size, group, and function. The information also covers school systems in detail, distinguishing between independent and dependent districts.
The Census of Governments is conducted every five years in years ending in “2” and “7,” providing an official count of active U.S. governments through its Organization Component. According to the Census Bureau, “Now, in addition to the Census of Governments product series, select tables will be published annually.”
Data users can access the latest Government Organization tables on the Census Bureau website at www.census.gov/topics/public-sector/government-organization/data/tables.html. The Organization Public Use Files are also available at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/gus/data/datasets.html.
