The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that it will provide embargoed access to the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates for subscribers starting January 27 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The data will become publicly available on January 29.

The ACS offers detailed information about people and housing in the United States, including statistics on language use, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, the ACS is unique in providing local-level estimates for more than 40 different topics.

These new estimates will be accessible to embargo subscribers for a range of geographic areas. This includes all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, places, census tracts, and block groups.

The embargo period will last from January 27 at 10 a.m. ET until January 29 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this time, wire services and distribution outlets are not allowed to release news stories or data files based on the embargoed information before the official public release date. More details about these restrictions can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy. All related data products—including those on data.census.gov, through APIs, summary files, and other tools—will be made available to everyone by January 29 at 10 a.m. ET.

Individuals interested in accessing these statistics during the embargo period can register online at the Census Bureau’s website.
