Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the California Transportation Commission has approved $1.1 billion in funding for transportation projects across the state. The funds will support new zero-emission buses, charging stations, and related infrastructure, as well as improvements to bridges, highways, and local streets.
The investments are part of the Governor’s Build More, Faster – For All infrastructure agenda. According to Newsom, “Guided by the Governor’s Build More, Faster – For All infrastructure agenda, these improvements will make California communities safer and more climate resilient.”
Among the projects receiving funding is a $53 million allocation to purchase 12 clean energy locomotives for Southern California’s Metrolink system. An additional $57 million will be used to repair a section of State Route 1 near Lucia that was damaged by landslides during last winter’s storms. Another $9.5 million will help construct a mobility center in Santa Maria designed to serve as a hub for regional clean-energy buses.
Other projects include $15 million to replace the historic Seventh Street Bridge in Modesto and $13 million to restore parts of State Route 38 in San Bernardino County that were damaged by the El Dorado fire. Additionally, $839,000 has been allocated for bike lanes and sidewalk improvements on South Avenue in Orange Cove, Fresno County.
The announcement also included statements from California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, Caltrans Director Dina El-Tawansy, and California Transportation Commission Chair Darnell Grisby.
