The Automobile Club of Southern California has announced a significant rise in gas prices across most areas of Southern California, marking the second occurrence of double-digit increases this year during the week of August 28.

On August 28, 2025, the Automobile Club reported that the statewide average for self-serve regular gasoline was $4.59 per gallon. This represents an increase of 10 cents from the previous week and is three cents below last year’s figure. Meanwhile, the national average stood at $3.21, which is eight cents higher than the prior week and 15 cents lower than a year ago. Local averages were noted as $4.61 in Los Angeles-Long Beach, $4.67 in San Diego, $4.58 on the Central Coast, $4.46 in Riverside, and $4.52 in Bakersfield, with weekly changes ranging from seven to 15 cents and year-over-year differences from seven cents lower to four cents higher.

According to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s report on September 2, 2025, gas prices in Los Angeles-Long Beach averaged $4.64 for regular gasoline, $4.85 for midgrade, $5.02 for premium, and $5.13 for diesel. These prices are slightly higher compared to last week and last month, with regular and premium also surpassing last year’s levels.

Doug Shupe from the Auto Club said that “most of the recent price increases at the pump happened last weekend after a spike in Los Angeles wholesale gasoline prices due to some unplanned refinery maintenance,” according to Oil Price Information Service reports. He further mentioned that “for the first time this year in some Southern California areas, pump prices are higher than they were on this date in 2024.”

The Automobile Club of Southern California is part of AAA’s national federation and offers services to members across various counties including Inyo, Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Tulare, and Ventura counties. Founded in 1902 with approximately 1,500 members initially as AAA (American Automobile Association), it has grown into a federation serving over 65 million members across North America with services such as roadside assistance and travel planning.
