Amazon has announced over $1 billion in new investments aimed at raising pay and reducing health care costs for its U.S. fulfillment and transportation employees. The initiative is part of the company’s strategy to compete for talent while emphasizing safety, mobility, and community impact.

“Average pay is increasing to more than $23 per hour, and average total compensation is increasing to more than $30 an hour when you include the value of our industry-leading benefits package,” said Udit Madan, Senior Vice President, Amazon Worldwide Operations. “We’re raising pay again across our network, lowering the cost of health care for those on our entry-level plan, and raising the annual progression increases. We’re making a substantial change in our entry-level health care plan and lowering the cost to only pay $5 per week and $5 for copays, starting in 2026. These investments are part of our ongoing commitment to making Amazon a place where people can thrive.”

According to Amazon, the update highlights benefits in major hubs like California, where the company reports significant job creation and local spending through its facilities and delivery network. This move positions compensation within a broader narrative of “good jobs” and growth.

Under the plan detailed by Amazon, average base pay for eligible U.S. operations roles will rise to more than $23 per hour, with average total compensation exceeding $30 per hour when elected benefits are included. The company also notes increased annual progression raises that reward tenure and performance. Starting in 2026, employees on the entry-level health plan will pay $5 per week with $5 copays, a reduction in out-of-pocket costs designed to expand access and predictability for household budgets.

Amazon states that its workplace safety performance continues to improve, reporting a 34% decrease in injuries requiring more than basic first aid over the past five years. This improvement is supported by investments in ergonomics, robotics, coaching, and data-driven interventions across sites. The company frames safety as foundational to its operations strategy and employee experience.

Udit Madan oversees Amazon Worldwide Operations as senior vice president, leading the company’s global fulfillment, transportation, and logistics ecosystem. Before ascending to his current role, Madan led middle and last mile operations as a vice president after starting at Amazon as a software development engineer.

Amazon is a global technology company that builds retail, logistics, and cloud infrastructure serving consumers, sellers, and developers. In the U.S., it employs more than a million people and invests heavily in automation and training. The company’s 2024 economic impact materials describe over $1 trillion in GDP contributions tied to its broader ecosystem.
