A few months after being officially appointed as chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), Dr. Alberto J. Román continues to emphasize his advocacy for immigrant communities in his leadership role. LACCD is recognized as the largest community college district in California.

Dr. Román began serving as interim chancellor in November 2024 and was formally named to the position in May 2025. As chancellor, he is responsible for setting the strategic vision of the district and overseeing its operations, finances, academics, and public relations, all under the oversight of the Board of Trustees.

Reflecting on his journey from an immigrant child to a key leader in higher education, Dr. Román said his story represents “the epitome of the American dream.” He has stated that his leadership challenges negative stereotypes about immigrants: “his new role debunks the idea of immigrants being seen just as criminals and rapists.” Dr. Román expressed pride in supporting Latino, immigrant, and undocumented communities during a period when these groups face increased targeting and racial profiling.
